How Many Hours of Video Games is Healthy for Adults?

We've heard all the arguments on both ends of the spectrum. There are those that believe that video games are bad for us, and that porn games are especially bad. Then, there are those of us that believe that everything in moderation, including gaming can actually provide benefits. So which one of these people is correct?

Well, science can help us put this debate to rest once and for all. Surprisingly, according to a recent study by Oxford University, one hour of playing video games every day is better than not playing at all when it comes to the well being of a person as well as their mental health.

According to the study, the sweet spot is between around one and three hours of game play per day for mental health improvements.  Compare this to about one to two hours of gaming per day for younger people such as teenagers.

How much gaming is too much?

According to the same study, once you surpass the three hour mark, all the befits are all but negated. If you plan on gaming for more than three hours a day, you should limit the activity to no more than four days per week.

Keep in mind that these are just averages based on a fairly small sample size. Some people can handle more gaming time, while for some people, even short gaming sessions can have adverse affects on their life. If any important part of your life is being negatively impacted by your video game habit, including work, school, social life, relationships and sleep, then it might be time to take a break.
